Canyon Dance Academy Faculty: As a faculty, we meet regularly to coordinate lesson plans, share teaching tips and ideas, and discuss upcoming projects. We are dedicated to teaching your children, and helping them develop into great dancers and wonderful human beings!

GINA B. DARLINGTON is the executive director of Canyon Movement Company and Canyon Dance Academy. Gina’s training began at the Virginia Tanner Children’s Dance Theater at the University of Utah at age 4. She received her dance degree from Brigham Young University in 1991. She also attended the University of Utah and University of Nebraska in Omaha. She has performed in dance companies in Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, and Arizona. She has been an Artist-in Residence for the State of Arizona where she conducted numerous residencies throughout northern Arizona. Gina is an associate faculty member for Coconino Community College (since 1993) and recently was a guest teacher at the American College Dance Festival in Salt Lake City, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Bellingham, WA. Previously, Gina owned and operated Gina’s School of Dance in Sandy, Utah, and Danceworks Studio in Omaha and Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Gina keeps busy with her husband and five sons. Her philosophy and teaching style is congruent with those methods taught at the Children’s Dance Theater at the University of Utah.

CAROL HART is the Assistant Director of Canyon Dance Academy and teaches creative movement at the Academy. Her dance background began in the San Francisco Bay Area and continued at Oberlin College performing with Oberlin Dance Company. She has a Masters Degree in microbiology. Carol performs with Canyon Movement Company. She serves on CMC's Board of Directors. She is married to Prof. Stephen Hart. They have two dancing children: Lukas, 9 and Kira, 12.

HEATHER BOSTIAN, MFA is a professional union actress holding two master's degrees in theater arts, founded her own very successful theater company, performed in many stage plays, TV commercials, voice-overs, and movies in SF bay area. She taught commercial acting in all the major talent agencies in SF. Currently Heather belly dances, ballroom dances, line dances, rides her Mustang pony and was voted twice BEST MASSAGE THERAPIST here in Flagstaff.

BETSY HUTCHINSON has been dancing since she was in the 3th grade. She grew up in Glendale, AZ where she danced at Marylin's Academy of Dance.  She enjoys all kinds of dancing, especially tap and ballet.  Betsy will graduate in May from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Elementary and Special Education.

BARBARA KLIMOWSKI grew up studying with, and later, teaching for Susan Chang School of Dance. Barbara earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Theatre and Dance, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and English Education from the University of Wyoming. Her Master's work in Dance at the University of Iowa enhanced her understanding of movement, choreography and teaching techniques: She then earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling with a major area of study in the unique needs of dance majors. Post college, Barbara has enjoyed choreographing and performing with several regional dance groups and has taught master classes in dance as it relates to worship arts. She was owner/director of the Prima School of Dancing, in Rapid City, South Dakota, where she taught ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and musical theatre to kids from 2 to 92 years of age.

CYNTHIA DEWELL AHLERS' professional career in New York City led her to dance in the companies of contemporary choreographers like Jennifer Muller/The Works, Ralph Lemon, Hannah Kahn,and many others including Jody Oberfelder, with whom she was invited to perform at Paul Newman’s “Hole in the Wall Gang” camp. She performed and choreographed for the non-profit organization, Dancers Responding to AIDS. Cynthia made her Broadway debut at the Shubert Theater in Nothing Like a Dame ‘98 & ‘99, a benefit for the Actor’s Fund of America. Cynthia moved from NYC to Flagstaff with her four children in 2002. Her work has been commissioned, and she has received space grants and awards for her teaching and choreography. Cynthia has been Associate Faculty at Northern Arizona University and Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy. Currently, she is Associate Faculty in the Dance Department at Coconino Community College. She is a Pilates Method Alliance Certified Pilates Teacher and teaches at her private studio - Performance Pilates.

 

GINA SHORTEN has danced her entire life including at FALA and CCC. She was invited to dance with the Alvin Ailey Summer Dance Program in 2005. She’s a member of CCC’s dance company, Encore. Gina will be graduating from NAU in December. Gina directs Bravura!
